Email me at kathrynthies (at) gmail (dot) com if you’re interested in any of the services listed below!
I will go through your manuscript and look for factual errors, errors in sentence flow and structure, dialogue, plot, and character inconsistencies, and anything else that may need to be adjusted or changed altogether. I look forward to helping you make your story stand out!
The general critique will include a summary of my thoughts coming away from your project, a list of broad suggestions, along with major strengths and weaknesses that I noticed while editing. The chapter and chapter-by-chapter critiques will be more specific, focusing on each individual chapter that you provide. I will include any suggestions or ideas necessary in either inline comment or in list form.
A final note: please don’t send me erotica, horror, occult, mystery, or religious fiction! I have less experience reading these genres than I do with most others, and I don’t feel as though I am qualified to edit and critique them in the way that they deserve. Thank you!
Frequently Asked Questions
What *exactly* is in the Sample Chapter pack?
Inline commenting on suggestions, ideas, and errors, a summary document of my thoughts regarding your chapter, a list of more general (not tied to any particular line) suggestions, lists of your story’s strengths and weaknesses, and any questions I have coming away from your project.
What is the difference between general and chapter-by-chapter critique?
The general critique covers the entire story, whereas the chapter-by-chapter critique goes in-depth with each individual chapter.
However, should you go with the Detailed Structural Critique pack, you will receive both critiques in your summary document.
What *exactly* is in the Structural Critique pack?
Overall inline commenting on suggestions, ideas, and errors, a summary document of my thoughts regarding your story, a list of more general (not tied to any particular line) suggestions, lists of your story’s strengths and weaknesses, and any questions I have coming away from your project.
What *exactly* is in the Detailed Structural Critique pack?
All features of the Structural Critique pack, along with the same on a chapter-by-chapter basis.
What do you mean by ‘ideas’? Aren’t those the same as suggestions?
While suggestions are more serious- consider changing this character’s age, leave out the prologue, etc- ideas are the ‘what ifs’ that happen when I get excited about your story. You have no obligation whatsoever to include anything I say. I am, by the way, going to get excited about your story.
Your idea is totally different from my plot; I hate it.
I’m sorry! Disregard it entirely. This is your story, and you have the power to do whatever you want in it. My hope in even including them is that my ideas will spark your ideas, and as a result, your story will grow richer and more detailed.
Do I need to change everything now that you’ve mentioned it?
Of course not! This is your story, and if you so choose you could disregard the whole critique- or follow it word for word. My job is to help you polish your story’s structure, and if your idea of polishing is different from mine, it’s totally fine. I’m honored to read it no matter what.
I can’t afford to pay what you’re asking, but I still want to hire you.
First of all, thank you for mentioning this. I’ve been unable to pay for professional edits for my own projects before, and I totally understand where you’re coming from. I can’t just offer my services for free, though I am willing to negotiate prices- ask if you need to!
I want to purchase the Sample Chapter pack, but my first chapter is less than 2,000 words. Can I just send my first two thousand words?
There is absolutely nothing stopping you from doing that, so…go right ahead? But before you do, go over the chapter and make sure it’s complete. Don’t info dump, but invest your reader in the story! Make it interesting!
How should I send you my manuscript?
Sharing a Google Doc with me is the absolute easiest method. If you use a different word processor or it is in a different file format, converting it to a .docx file should work. Should you have any problems, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to beta read everything sent to me, but I’ll certainly try. Here’s my page on it explaining what it is, but chances are, if you write, you’re going to need one at some point. Fill out this form if you’re interested, and I’ll let you know if I can do it!
note: If your genre is not in the drop-down, please mention it in the ‘Premise’ box, but recognize that there is a lower chance that I’ll accept. Genres that are definite nos are as follows: horror, occult, and erotica.
